Lets buy a satellite for global good ! m not jokin

Palomar5logo

Last october I was part of a unique experiment - Palomar5 in Berlin. The Deutsche Telekom ( T-Mobile) funded 7 week - innovation camp brought together 30 young changemakers from different domains and geography. As a resident innovator we worked on various ideas and one of them "ahumanright.org" is the brainchild of Kosta Grammatis.

“Why don’t we recycle a satellite? Just fire the thrusters and re-position it over a country that could use better access to the Internet. There has got to be a few we can buy?” - Kosta , a visiting researcher at MIT Media Labs

Serendipity : The Terrestar-1 satellite, launched in 2009, is as big as a school bus, connects to a tiny handset called the Genus, and proves that communication satellites can provide data services effectively. The company that owns that satellite filed for chapter-11 bankruptcy protection on October 19th 2010.

Buythissatellite.org has already raised $28,000 of $150,000 in the hope of eventually purchasing ( through further financing of the additional millions ) the Terrestar-1 satellite to provide free internet connections to people in the developing world. Lets support the idea !

Awesome, just a question, Geosynchronous orbits are one of the most expensive and regulated commodities there are. Just wondering once you have the satelite how you'll pay the rights to move it and maintain it?

But yeah highly agreed we need more orbital assets for global good. Glad to see somebody other than the HAMs in this "space" (sorry couldn't resist ending on a bad pun).
